The era of manuscripts is long gone. However a certain poetry and beauty emanates from the gestures intrinsic to calligraphy and seems to lend a rare and precious character to manuscripts, as a calligraphic work is unique and cannot be replicated identically. The concept of automated calligraphy is crystallised halfway between ancestral practices and contemporary technologies, replacing hand gestures with mechanical movements. The CNC can imitate these gestures with precision and execute more complex movements that are impossible to achieve manually. The automation of calligraphy is an attempt to give handwritten texts new aspects of reproducibility, precision and efficiency, while trying to preserve the aura of calligraphy, with its distinct movements, tools and aesthetic.
